Saturday's Box Scores & Sunday's Trial

My Saturday morning began with my tardy sitter informing me that she wanted to further curtail her availability for the summer. So noted.

Jamie's game: 2 for 3 batting, including a tomahawk swing for a hit (to left field) of a pitch clearly above the top of his head. Errorless in full game at first base. Scored 2 runs and had 1 RBI as his team prevailed with a score of 12-11 in the round-robin, double-elimination tourney.

Jack's game: 2 for 3 batting, including a bases-loaded single and a double. Hit in 3 RBI. (That would be 75% of the team's total run production of 4). Defensive game was adequate. His team lost in the same round-robin, double-elimination tourney.

Monday night will feature Jack's team against Jamie's team, with the loser's season over.

Bringing us to Sunday...

I paid $4.35/gallon for gas. This factoid is symbolic of the day.

Jack and his 14-page Literary Magazine Project. The table of contents ought to have read thusly:

* Painful Creative Writing (in the Style of the Author...or NOT so much)

* "Literary Criticize" This: Spelling & Grammar Hurted My Retinas!

* Puzzles for those Who Can't Plan, Organize and Sequence

* Feature Article: My Mom Can Repeat 6th Grade Better Than Your Mom Can

* Grotesque Bibliographies, Especially Wretched When One's Primary Source Materials Are, groan, wikipedia.com & factmonster.com

* Advertisements: When Clever Ideas from Mom Trump the Teacher's Rubric

* Letters to the "Ed"

* Full-Color Trading Cards: Jack's Lucky Patty Kiki's Color Cartridge Was Available Because Mom Steadfastly Refused to Make Another Trip to Staples

* Google Images Are A Student's Best Friend

7.5 hours of my life given to celebrate C.S. Lewis. (If, indeed, the word 'celebrate' would suggest shrieking like a banshee at the boy who couldn't find his rubric and intermittent negative reinforcement of inattention, fidgeting, wandering, lollygagging, and general grab-ass).

Fortunately, it is d-o-n-e. Mind you, I wrote in the pagination and waved the white flag at having columns in the hopes of having all four children survive the Day of C.S.

Good ol' Lewis did have some good quotes, which I got to see at Jack's suggestion of brainyquotes.com so in order to have this project yield something redeeming, here you are:

We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

Experience: that most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God, do you learn.

Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.

The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.

The very fact that I can hear Jack wandering around the house muttering, "I think I'm going to get an 'A', oh yeah," is testimony to my non-violent shrieking and, of course, that handy-dandy master's degree from that fancy-schmancy school.
